The current Hyundai Santa Fe has only been on sale in certain markets since the start of 2018, making it somewhat of a surprise the car manufacturer is updating the SUV so quickly and so thoroughly. Traditional gasoline engines will also be offered. Mind you, this isn’t the first time that the Kia-Hyundai group has underpinned a current model on a newer platform as they had done the same with the Sorento back in 2012.Īccording to the Korean carmaker, the new Santa Fe will be the first Hyundai model in Europe and first Hyundai SUV globally to utilize the new architecture that was introduced on the latest (2020) Sonata last year. The government estimates the most efficient version will earn 23 mpg city and 28 highway. The Tucson's two four-cylinder engines earn EPA ratings that are merely average for this segment. Hyundai Tucson Compact SUV Will Be New for 2022.This lack of bias to either the sporty or floaty ends of the handling spectrum strikes us as the kind of balanced nature that crossover shoppers will find appealing. It also offers a very smooth and refined ride, and the suspension soaks up all but the harshest bumps nicely. Body roll is well controlled, the steering is well weighted, and overall the Tucson changes direction with confidence. Handling isn't all that noteworthy in the Tucson it's competent but not sporty. Unfortunately, we haven't sampled the upgraded 2.4-liter engine, but expect it to deliver slightly better acceleration times. In our testing, the base 2.0-liter delivered lethargic performance in all of our metrics. Two different four-cylinder engines are on tap to power the Tucson-a 164-hp 2.0-liter or a 181-hp 2.4-liter both team with a six-speed automatic. Choosing the SEL also adds 18-inch wheels and silver-painted exterior accents that give the Tucson a classier appearance Engine, Transmission, and Performance The SEL offers most of the niceties that modern SUV shoppers want, including dual-zone automatic-climate controls, a rear-seat USB port, heated front seats, and SiriusXM satellite radio. We'd stick with the mid-range SEL, which was also our pick for 2020. Black Noir Pearl has been replaced by Ash Black, Gemstone Red has been replaced by Red Crimson, and Sage Brown has been replaced by Coliseum Gray. In fact, the only thing that's different this year is color choices. Hyundai is gearing up for an all-new Tucson to bow for the 2022 model year, so in the meantime it's making almost no changes to the 2021 model.
On the road, the Hyundai's ride is smooth and its handling agreeable a host of driver-assistance features are standard as well. Fuel efficiency and cargo space aren't class leading, but they aren't far off either, and the Tucson's other positive traits help to bridge that gap. Its cabin is nicely laid out and offers plenty of convenience and luxury features-especially toward the more expensive end of the lineup where the Limited and Ultimate models take up residence.
Hyundai's handsome and value-packed Tucson compact SUV may be overshadowed by the luxury Palisade and sprightly Kona SUVs, but like its siblings it has a lot to offer.
